What Are Single Stock.

Single stock futures are futures contracts on individual stocks. There are currently over 80 well-known stock futures such as IBM, eBay, and Philip Morris. These futures products provide investors with a cost-effective vehicle for participating in U.S. equities markets.

A stock futures contract is an agreement to deliver shares of a specific stock at a designated date in the future, called the expiration date. Most stock futures contracts are not held until expiration because traders typically offset their position - selling if the trader is long or buying if the trader is short.

The price of an equity futures typically tracks the price of the underlying instrument nearly tick for tick, so trading strategies followed in the stock market are generally transferable to the stock futures market. Single stock futures may therefore be used with a broad range of trading strategies and for a variety of portfolio management needs.

When a stock future is traded, both the buyer and seller put up a good faith deposit called margin. The margin requirement for security futures is generally 20% of the underlying value of the securities, although this requirement may be lower if the investor also holds certain offsetting positions in cash equities, stock options, or other security futures in the same securities account.
Advantages of Single Stock Futures
• With margin requirements of 20%, single stock futures provide a highly capital efficient way to participate in equities.
• No uptick is required to establish a short position.
• Short sellers may benefit from eliminating the costs and inefficiencies associated with the stock loan process.

What is Stock Trading.

Stock Trading

Trading stocks. You hear that phrase all the time, although it really is wrong – you don’t trade stocks like baseball cards (I’ll trade you 100 IBMs for 100 Intels).
Trade = Buy or Sell
To “trade” means to buy and sell in the jargon of the financial markets. How a system that can accommodate one billion shares trading in a single day works is a mystery to most people. No doubt, our financial markets are marvels of technological efficiency.
Yet, they still must handle your order for 100 shares of Acme Kumquats with the same care and documentation as my order of 100,000 shares of MegaCorp.
You don’t need to know all of the technical details of how you buy and sell stocks, however it is important to have a basic understanding of how the markets work. If you want to dig deeper, there are links to articles explaining the technical side of the markets.

What Are Stocks

Stocks

Stocks, or equities, are issued by companies and represent proportionate ownership interest in those companies. Owning a share of stock represents a small piece of ownership in that company. When you own stock in a company, you can potentially benefit from the dividends that are issued by the company, and/or the stock price of the company if it goes higher. Conversely, when the performance of the company goes down, you may receive lower dividends or the price of the stock may decrease.
Why Invest in Stocks?
Stocks usually have higher short-term risk than bonds. Historically, equity markets have tended to move both up and down in a more dramatic manner on a day-to-day basis than traditional fixed income instruments. However, equities have historically produced the highest returns relative to other investment classes.* An investment portfolio containing a mix of stocks, bonds and cash is one way to diversify your investments and plan for your future goals.
Types of Stocks:
Blue Chip Stocks are stocks that are issued by large, well-established companies such as General Electric, IBM and Coca Cola. These stocks have long histories of financial growth, earnings and of paying consistent dividends.
Value Stocks are generally regarded to be underpriced compared to the relative financial strength of the company which they are issued by. Often the company has fallen out of favor for one reason or another, but continues to have solid financial earnings.
Growth Stocks are generally issued by companies with solid growth potential but have less of a track record of earnings success. Growth stock companies tend to have sales and earnings that are increasing faster than the average company, although they usually pay small or no dividends. Although these companies do not typically pay dividends, they do retain earnings and reinvest them in order to fund company expansion.

Plain and simple, stock is a share in the ownership of a company. Stock represents a claim on the company's assets and earnings. As you acquire more stock, your ownership stake in the company becomes greater. Whether you say shares, equity, or stock, it all means the same thing.

shirley 11-09-2010 13:35

Single stock futures (also known as SSF) are futures markets that are based upon an individual stock (such as APA for Apache), rather than an entire stock index (such as the Dow Jones). Single stock futures are exactly the same as any other futures markets, and are traded in exactly the same way.

Single stock futures are available for many US, European, and Asian stocks, and are offered through futures exchanges, such as OneChicago in the US, or the DTB (Eurex) in Europe.

Single Stock Futures (SSF) allow investors to profit in both bull and bear markets and hedge against some of the weak performers in their portfolio.SSF are futures traded on individual stocks. Holding a SSF guarantees the sale of purchase of its underlying share upon expiry of its contract at an agreed price. As it derives its value from the price of its underlying security, it's assumed the SSF is similar to a warrant. However, there's a distinct difference; the SSF doesn't carry a strike price (the stated price per share for which the underlying stock may be purchased by the option i.e. warrant holder upon exercise of the option contract).

Hello Dreda,

I think the stock market is a place where stock trading is done. It is a market where stocks are bought and sold.

goldie123 21-09-2010 04:47

When you own stock, you actually own part of the company, and the value of your shares goes up and down as the company's stock value fluctuates. It's important to remember, though, that when stock prices go down, you don't actually lose anything unless you sell the stock while the price is lower than what you paid for it.

One of the best ways to make money from home is by trading in shares and commodities. Today, online commodity trading has become very popular due to the fact that it allows you to earn good money in a short time. However, if it has an upside, it also has a downside and that is the risks involved. If you are interested in trading commodities online, you shouldn't make a hasty entrance.

jackie101 22-09-2010 06:58

Before you start trading, it's important and equally wise to have a well-researched and well-thought out trading plan ready. Since we are talking about real money, there are risks and some more. Research for good online trading tips and advice online, pick up some good books and do your homework well. This way, you will not just know what you are doing, but also be able to do it well. Also, find your way through your broker's trading platform, better still ask them for a demo so that you can see clearly how orders need to be executed.

Finally, online commodity trading demand solid discipline and a secure trading plan for success.

As the answer below states, you should start at investopedia.com. They are a very good resource for starting out. If you have cable TV in the United States (or elsewhere), you should find CNBC on cable TV. They have a major US cable station and CNBC worldwide, that follows stock markets in Asia, Europe and the United States. You can also follow them on their website for all kinds of financial and political news that affects the financial markets.

I have also included a few more, marketwatch and smart money.

Good luck in your investing! I'm not sure that my answer is the answer you were looking for, but investing in stocks is something you will have to read about online. All of the websites I have listed have tutorials and very good information to help you get started.

Happy investing!

Experience.
All level II does is provide you with more bid/ask info. Instead of seeing only the best bid/ask, you see those further away. Whether or not it is valuable is debatable. Some like it, some experienced investors ignore it. If you have it, the best think to do is follow the level II quotes and price movement. See if it tells you anything.

Also, be aware that level II is for NASDAQ. All bid/ask quotes will not show.

Doesn't matter.

If we say 13.5, or 15.5.....none of us know how well you'll drive the car.

You might suck, and get a 20sec. Or do shockingly well, and pull a 12.

Go to a track and find out.

Run several times, and take the average.

Issuing and selling shares of stock is a common method corporations use to raise capital in order to carry out the goals of the company, such as expansions and improvements, without borrowing large amounts of money. Without the income generated by the sale of shares of stock, many companies would not be able to come up with the cash to accomplish these goals.

An instrument that signifies an ownership position (called equity) in a corporation, and represents a claim on its proportional share in the corporation's assets and profits. Ownership in the company is firm by the number of shares a person owns divided by the total number of shares outstanding. For example, if a company has 1000 shares of stock outstanding and a person owns 50 of them, then he/she owns 5% of the company. Most stock also provides voting rights, which give shareholders a proportional vote in certain corporate decisions. Only a certain type of company called a corporation has stock; other types of companies such as sole proprietorships and limited partnerships do not issue stock also called equity or equity securities or corporate stock.

A single transaction equivalent to the simultaneous sale of a put and purchase of a call for a given stock. Single stock futures essentially allow investors to sell a stock short without waiting for a downtick as would otherwise be required. Behaving exactly like a futures contract, an SSFs give investors increased capabilities to leverage themselves within the market. Additionally, these products, unlike most options, can be traded on margin.
