It's a type of liquidity aggregation by a broker. It either maintains a pool of liquidity providers that are ready to match your trade (ECN) or route your orders straight to somewhere else for execution (STP). I prefer to use ECN from Hotforex, because it is cheaper.

Most of the reputed brokers like hfm etc use competitive spreads on their accounts reducing the transactional costs and thus more profits for the traders.

how to tell if a broker is a true ecn, regulations? and a lot of known brokers are regulated, but something deep down inside me tells me that most if not all brokers have a form of bias that gets them extra income like everything else, as traders thats what we are trying to navigate.

When I vet “true ECN”, like HFM, I look for raw spreads + commission, market execution, visible depth (if offered), and consistent slippage behavior during high-vol events.
